I could not let this week come to a rest without mentioning the heat that is oppressing the residents of Sydney. Whilst the eyes of the country are focused firmly on Cyclone Yasi which hit Northern Queensland last night, the residents of Sydney are slowly melting away, not daring to complain considering the scope of the devastation up north. I grew up in Durban, South Africa, which proudly proclaims itself as the year round summer city, where the humidity was sometimes so heavy that our primary school which didn't have aircon used to send us home when the barometer dropped past a certain point. Well, let me tell you Durbanites, if that was the case here this week, my boys would have had an extra week of school holidays. The city is fuzzy with humidity. The temperature has reached 42 degrees Celsius in parts and boy, oh boy, if you take a train with thousands of other commuters at peak hour, and shoddy aircon in the carriages, you are likely to have lost ten kilos by the time you exit the station.
Even my very active boys have slowed down, not asking to go to the park or even to leave the couch. Apparently it will rain on Sunday which should bring welcome relief except of course it is Mitchell's birthday then and it will likely have to be postponed.
In other news, Raf started Grade 1 and is with his best friend, Orla, which makes him so happy. Have a cool as a cucumber week!
