Well this week has been a whirlwind one but lots of fun and a great way to start 2010. At the end of the last post I wrote about going to the moonlight theatre in Centennial Park to watch Julie and Julia. It was a great night. We brought a picnic and hired some bean bag loungers to lie in and watched the movie on the giant inflatable screen under the stars and bats. (They never mention this on the information brochures but Sydney is full of bats.) The movie was sweet and we enjoyed the experience despite a huge furry spider spending the duration of the movie spinning a huge web behind my right ear. I am so glad we saw it in time to avoid it although some other poor girl had to perform the 'spider in my hair' dance on her way down the stairs.
The next evening was New Years Eve and we had a glorious evening at my brother's home where he had a barbeque with some of his friends. There were lots of kids there too and Rafi and Mitch had a ball playing with sparklers, neon glow bands and watching the fireworks. We watched the 9 o'clock fireworks and then left soon after eating because the kids were so tired. The next morning in what was already a great way to start the new year, the kids slept late and we woke up feeling very refreshed. Not much is open on New Years Day but we decided to take a drive up to Dee Why beach. As luck would have it, it started raining just as we pulled up to the beachfront but we found an awesome fish and chip place called D Y Seafood, which provided us with shelter and some of the best fish, chips and salad that I have had so far in Australia. The salads in particular were great with none of the normal limp mesclun, tomato and cucumber assortment that such places are usually associated with. My salad was broccolini, chicken, pine nuts, and a creamy mustard dressing. Craig had a wild rice, artichoke, chickpea and sundried tomato salad. Anyway, after we had eaten, the rain had cleared up so we went back to the beach figuring that we hadn't driven all that way for no reason. We walked along the promenade and the kids raced up and down the walkway.
The next day it was raining again so we headed on out to the QVB building in the CBD to look at all the shops. Craig had never been before so it was nice for him to see the buiding as it really is beautiful inside with the Christmas decorations still up and a huge clock with a little sailboat that moves around it in the centre of the store. Needless to say it was very full and we didn't stay long as I am not partial to the crowds.
On Sunday we went to the Sydney Olympic Stadium to the Aquatic centre. It was magic. There was so much for the children to do and we had a blast. The kids ran under the giant bucket of water, we all went down the waterslides and the best fun was going in the 'rapids' around the circumference of the pool. Rafi had two friends with him and they didn't want to get out the water. It was hugely confidence building too and Mitch did a few kicks (although with his armbands on) and thanks to his girl friend Zoe from South Africa, Rafi started trying to do handstands under the water, an amazing thing considering how petrified he was of the pool at the beginning of last year.
Yesterday the boys were back at school. Rafi has to go three more times and then he is finished with pre-school and starts at 'big boy' school. Mitch is moving up to the next group at the end of February after his birthday.
Now we are busy trying to organise a party for Mitch's 3rd birthday and are looking at different venue and entertainment options. He tells me every day that he wants a Thomas cake - definitely no surprises there. Will post soon with all the party updates.
