Aussie, Aussie, aussie, oi, oi, oi

Yesterday was our first Australia Day. We took ourselves off on the train to Darling Harbour to join in the festivities. Its amazing to live in a country where everyone is so proud and happy just to be Australian. Cars drove past with Australian flags hanging out the windows, kids had flag tattoos and face paint all over their bodies and people were dressed in everything red, white and blue. We joined the throng and the first thing we did was to rush off to buy some flags for the kids which they waved wildly in the air, narrowly avoiding taking out some eyes in the process. It was a really hot day yesterday and the heat was oppressive. Never a nation to worry about decorum, kids had stripped off to their undies and were running through the water features which are all over Darling Harbour. I even saw some adults slip in fully dressed to cool down. We headed off harbourside first to get some lunch which we ate at the children's concert. Miffy the Bunny did some dancing and sang the obligatory " When you're happy and you know it" and the guy from Playschool, a popular kids show, sang some upbeat tunes on his guitar. Afterwards we went for icecream which wasn't great but refreshing considering the ridiculous heat. Darling Harbour has a huge play area for kids the whole year through so we headed that way and the kids had a blast on the giant slides and climbing frames although I was getting a bit neurotic due to the crowds. They had bought in some special rides for the kids as well so they went on the merry-go-round ride. We all looked up as the helicopter with a giant Australian flag flew overhead and watched an airplane do some fancy sky writing manoevers - although we still don't know what he wrote becuase we only caught the first few letters - M I L L ... so if you are reading this and saw the whole word, please put us out of our misery and tell us what he was writing.
Eventually the heat just got to be too much and we headed home again. Mitch's favourite part of the day was just being in the train which made us think that perhaps on weekends we can just take the train to some far away place and back again and save a fortune on entertainment - ha ha.
Rafi starts 'big' school tomorrow. His uniform is ironed and there are labels in everything. We have bought all the goodies for his lunchbox. He is feeling a little apprehensive but excited too. I will definitely be posting the first uniform pics here.
